Educational Theatres
Lynchburg and its surrounding counties are fortunate to have a thriving theatre program in numerous middle schools, high schools, and colleges. This provides the youth an opportunity to perform in shows in a venue familiar to them along with friends and classmates. Because the cast pool is generally limited to the school population, chances are the performers know each other already and are around the same age and experience level. At these formative ages, students are given chances to explore their creative and challenge themselves to perform and become involved in something they may not otherwise do. Many, including those in the Lynchburg theatrical scene, credit their opportunities to perform in school or college productions as reasons why they have continued into adulthood. Furthermore, school theatres have more competition opportunities. It is common for one of the local schools to win a large regional or national youth theater competition. These educators are preparing the students for a potential future in community theatre and many have gone on to perform at the professional level.

In addition, theatre camps and youth productions are available to children and teenagers throughout the year. These are typically week or month-long programs that provide children learning sessions on the audition process, rehearsals, set design, choreography, acting skills, lighting and sound, and numerous other theatrical areas. This will often culminate in a large-scale performance for family and friends at the end of the camp period. The camps are available for any child of any experience level, and scholarships are often available if needed.

Below is a list of the various middle school, high school, and college theater programs, as well as theaters that have youth camps available. Click on the organization's name to be taken to their website. We encourage you to support these theaters even if you do not know any students involved. Public support is what keeps these programs thriving and supporting them supports the Greater Lynchburg community theaters.
